High BMI

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterised by high blood sugar levels resulting from the body's inability to properly produce or utilise insulin. In this stage, the blood sugar levels have reached a point where a diagnosis of diabetes is confirmed. In addition to the symptoms of the previous stages, viz high triglyceride levels, low HDL levels, high LDL levels, high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, obesity, excessive thirst, excessive urination, excessive frequency of urination and fatigue, the following symptoms may also manifest in the diabetes stage

  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Slow wound healing
  • Blurred vision
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Increased susceptibility to infections
ASSOCIATED HEALTH RISKS

Diabetes is commonly accompanied by a low level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) that contributes to the increased cardiovascular risk associated with this condition. Given that HDLs have the ability to improve and increase the uptake of glucose by skeletal muscle and to stimulate the secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta cells the possibility arises that a low HDL concentration in diabetes may also contribute to a worsening of diabetic control. Diabetes increases the risk of:

  • Reduced immunity
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood triglycerides
  • Low levels of HDL cholesterol
  • Insulin resistance
  • Stroke (cerebral)
  • Heart disease
