Causes of Dry Lips According to Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, dry lips are considered a Vata disorder, meaning it is caused due to aggravation in the Vata Dosha. Hence, it is more common among people who have dry skin, a characteristic of Vata Dosha

Some common factors that can aggravate Vata Dosha in the body and cause dry lips are:

  • Dry weather conditions or overexposure to the sun
  • Deficiency of vitamins
  • Excessive use of lipstick
  • Biting or licking your lips excessively
  • Insufficient water intake
  • Smoking
  • Excessive consumption of caffeinated drinks

Signs and Symptoms of Dry Lips

It is important to identify the signs and symptoms of dry lips and treat them on time. Otherwise, they may develop into a bacterial infection called Cheilitis.  

Some of the common signs and symptoms of dry lips are redness and dryness on the lips, sore lips, cracking and tender lips, etc.

  • Massage:

Massage your lips with oil or ghee to pacify Vata Dosha. You can also use bone marrow and muscle fat to massage your lips. 

  • Aloe Vera Gel:

Aloe Vera gel provides relief from the pain and tenderness of sore lips. You can apply freshly extracted aloe vera gel on your lips twice a day to rehydrate and soothe the dryness on the lips.

  • Honey:

Honey is one of the best remedies for dry lips. It helps to moisturise your lips and prevent infections. You can apply raw honey on your chapped lips 3-4 times a day.

  • Cucumber:

You can also use cucumber to nourish and hydrate your lips. Simply, extract some fresh cucumber juice and apply it to your lips twice a day.

  • Coconut Oil:

Another remedy to fight dryness and inflammation on the lips is coconut oil. You can massage your lips with warm coconut oil before sleeping for the best results.  

  • Water:

Dehydration is one of the leading causes of dry lips. Therefore, Ayurveda recommends drinking sufficient water throughout the day to prevent and treat dry lips. 

  • Coriander Leaves:

Coriander leaves are also highly beneficial in healing dry lips. You can apply some freshly extracted coriander juice on the lips twice a day. 

  • Rose Petals:

One of the best remedies for dry lips is rose petals. All you have to do is take a few rose petals and soak them in milk. After a few hours, grind them into a smooth paste and then apply it on the lips 2-3 times a day. 

  • Ghee in the Navel:

According to Ayurveda, Vata imbalance causes dry lips. To pacify Vata, Ayurveda recommends applying warm ghee in the navel using a cotton ball or your fingers.

How To Avoid Dry Lips?

  • Avoid using flavoured lip balms. Otherwise, you will lick or bite your lips frequently.
  • Use lip balm every few hours to moisturise your lips. 
  • Avoid overexposure to sun or harsh weather conditions by wearing a scarf on the mouth region. 
  • Do not exfoliate your lips excessively. 
  • Avoid using products that contain irritants or allergens.
