Heredity is one of the major risk factors causing diabetes type 2. Therefore, it is natural to be concerned about your health if your parents or anybody blood-related to you has diabetes, as it increases your risks of developing diabetes at some point in your life. It is, therefore, crucial that you know your family’s medical history to help lower your risk of developing diabetes.

Although having parents or family with diabetes puts you at the risk of developing it, you can effectively manage, and in some cases even prevent, it with some of these Ayurvedic methods and lifestyle changes.

Be Active

A sedentary lifestyle can increase the risks of Ama accumulation in the body causing an imbalance in the Doshas, therefore it is essential to be active in order to stay healthy. Yoga can be an effective alternative to maintain health and lower the risks of developing diabetes. Some of the yoga exercises that you can do include:- 

  • Paschimottanasana (Seated forward bend)
  • Kapal Bhati (Skull Shining breathing technique)
  • Supta Matsyendrasana (Lying-down body twist)
  • Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)
  • Shavasana (Corpse Pose)

Maintain a Healthy Diet 

Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is extremely crucial when it comes to managing most chronic diseases. Diabetes too can be managed with a balanced diet. Ensuring that you don’t consume foods that may spike up your sugar levels is the first step. Include a good amount of high fiber and whole grains in your diet. Garlic and onions must be included in your diet as garlic contains allicin, a compound that can potentially reduce sugar levels, while on the other hand, onion has low sugar characteristics. 

Consume plenty of green leafy vegetables as they can keep many health issues at bay. Include fruits with a low glycemic index in your diet such as apples, peaches, pears, oranges, guava, jambul, etc.

Drink Water from a Copper Vessel

Drinking water that has been overnight stored in a copper vessel can help balance all three Doshas. Unbalanced Doshas is often the cause of most chronic illnesses including diabetes. Therefore, balancing them can be your best bet at preventing or lowering the risks of developing diabetes.  

Herbs and Spices That Can Help Manage Diabetes

Amla

Amalaki or Indian Gooseberry is a potent Ayurvedic herb that is full of vitamin C and several essential antioxidants. The vitamin C content in this medicinal herb enables insulin resistance and effectively balances the blood sugar level which can be crucial in managing diabetes [5]. Alma also has several other medicinal properties and is known to be ideal for improving skin and hair quality. 

Fenugreek

Methi is a common Indian household ingredient that is considered to be an effective herb in keeping your blood sugar levels in check and improving insulin activities. They are rich in fibers that help can effectively slow down the digestion process and regulate the absorption of carbohydrates and sugar in the body [6]

Turmeric

Turmeric is a superfood and one of the most important medicinal spices in Ayurveda. It is loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that are essential for managing diabetes and various other associated ailments and chronic conditions. Studies have shown that curcumin, the active compound found in turmeric, may be effective in decrease the levels of glucose in the blood helping manage diabetes while reducing the risks of other associated health conditions and improving your overall health
