How to make Red Lentil Soup

Red Lentil Soup

The red lentils soup, a soothing dish for flu and diarrhoea is meant to balance all doshas. It’s especially good for those with pitta dosha. Those with vatta dosha, can have the soup twice a week but no more.


Ingredients needed

  • Red lentils- 1 cup

  • Water- 5 cups

  • Safflower oil- 2 tsp

  • Cumin seeds- 1 tsp

  • Black mustard seeds- 1 tsp

  • Hing- 1 pinch

  • Large cloves of garlic- 2, chopped

  • 5 curry leaves, fresh or dried

  • 1 small handful cilantro leaves, chopped

  • Turmeric- 1/2 tsp.

  • Masala powder- 1 tsp

  • Salt -1/2 tsp.

How to make red lentil soup?

Step No 1.

  • Wash red lentils. Soak overnight.
  • Drain in the morning. Keep aside.

Step No 2.

  • Boil lentils with 4 cups of water.
  • Cook uncovered on medium heat, for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Step No 3.

  • If water reduces too much, add one more cup, continue to cook for 15-20 minutes.
  • When the lentils become soft, keep them aside.

Step No 4.

  • Heat oil in a small pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and hing.
  • Let the seeds pop, add garlic and fry till brown. Add curry leaves, cilantro, turmeric and masala powder.

Step No 5.

  • Add this mixture to the soup, add salt and stir. Add more water, if need be.
  • Bring to a boil for 2 minutes. Serve hot.
