How to make Spiced Poha

Spiced Poha

Poha is uncooked flattened rice. It has mild sweet taste, is easy to digest, and is quite a popular breakfast food.

Poha may absorb water while rinsing and may not need water while cooking. It has the property to balance all three doshas.


Ingredients needed

  • Thick poha- 3cups

  • Safflower oil 1/3 cup

  • Black mustard seeds- 1 tsp.

  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp.

  • 5 curry leaves, fresh or dried

  • Salt- 1/2 tsp.

  • Turmeric- 1/2 tsp.

  • Hing- 1 pinch

  • 1/2 cup cilantro leaves, chopped

  • Small onion - 1, chopped fine

  • Small green chili- 1, chopped fine

  • Coconut flakes, cilantro, and lime for garnishing

How to make the spiced poha?

Step No 1.

  • Wash the poha twice, drain and set aside.

Step No 2.

  • Heat the oil in a frying pan, over medium heat, and add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves.

Step No 3.

  • Stir until the seeds pop, then add the turmeric, salt, and hing.

Step No 4.

  • Add the cilantro leaves, chopped onions and chili and cook till the onions becomes soft and slightly brown.

Step No 5.

  • To this mixture, add the poha, cover it, and turn off heat.

Step No 6.

  • Leave it for few minutes. Then serve it with coconut and cilantro, and a squeeze of fresh lime.
