What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words Ayur (life) and Veda (science or knowledge), meaning ‘knowledge of life.’ Ayurveda is a natural medicine system, dating its roots back to 3,000 years in India. The fundamental tenet of Ayurveda medicine is the idea of Doshas or body constitutions in individuals. Ayurveda promotes specific lifestyle changes and natural remedies to restore equilibrium between the body and the mind to promote overall well-being.
How does Ayurveda work?
According to Ayurveda, the constitution of every human being consists of three Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each of these doshas is thought to determine emotional & physical strengths and weaknesses, the foods our bodies need, the exercises that can work best for us, and more. Ayurveda tries to find a balance between all three doshas since it is based on the belief that disease occurs when these doshas are out of balance.
What health conditions can Ayurveda help with?
Ayurveda is an ancient branch of medicine, with the potential to treat a host of ailments. With a combination of dietary changes, the use of herbal medicines, massage, yoga, breathing exercises and a focus on managing the three doshas in an individual, Ayurveda adopts a holistic approach towards health and wellness. The Ayurvedic approach is beneficial in treating several diseases such as asthma, arthritis, low blood pressure and more.
Can Ayurveda be used alongside conventional medicine?
Managing chronic disease puts a strain on the healthcare systems, presenting new challenges in promoting personal health and well-being. Ayurveda offers hope in such critical times. While Ayurveda can be used as a complementary to conventional medicines without any harmful effects, it is recommended that you consult your healthcare provider to avoid any major complications.
How long does it take to see results with Ayurveda?
Ayurveda focuses on healing rather than treatment. It emphasises addressing the root causes of illness and not just the symptoms. Depending upon the gravity of the illness, the time taken to yield results varies from person to person. With a focus on a healthy lifestyle, consumption of nutritious foods and relaxation techniques such as yoga and panchakarma, Ayurveda offers a path to holistic health and well-being.
