how to Stop Vomiting in Children

It’s not uncommon for children to vomit occasionally and in most cases, this is not a cause for much concern and can be easily managed with natural remedies and home treatments. The most common causes for children vomiting include gastroenteritis or tummy infections, anxiety or motion sickness. At the same time, vomiting shouldn’t be ignored as kids are particularly vulnerable to dehydration, which is the main health risk. This is why ensuring adequate fluid intake is most important to ensure hydration and nutrition. This is why most natural remedies to stop vomiting in children focus on food and drinks.

Food Intake

As your child is unlikely to be able to keep any food or liquids down, avoid trying to feed your child regular foods. Instead focus on bland foods, such as clears soups and broths, mashed bananas, curd or mashed potatoes (1). These foods will help provide some nutrition, while also settling the stomach.

Dry Toast Or Boiled Rice

Dry toast and plain boiled rice may not be particularly palatable, but they are extremely easy to digest and can also help to absorb some of the stomach acids, thereby reducing vomiting. One of the best Indian remedies for vomiting children is actually the water from boiled rice. Instead of discarding the water, use it as a vomiting remedy as it contains starch and calories and is easy to digest. This will help with rehydration, while also boosting energy levels.

Ginger

Extract some ginger juice and mix it with a small amount of honey to make it more palatable. This is a great way to reduce nausea and vomiting. Just one tablespoon of ginger honey mixture would suffice as a vomiting remedy. Ginger is even proven to be safe as vomiting or nausea remedy in pregnant women and in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy (2).

Saunf

Saunf has long been used as a digestive aid in Ayurvedic medicine and is still popular across India. To use saunf as a vomiting remedy, simply add a spoonful of the seeds to a cup of boiling water and strain the water before drinking once it has steeped for at least 10 minutes. This may provide relief from both nausea and vomiting.

Lavang

Lavang

Lavang is another traditional Ayurvedic ingredient that has been used to remedy nausea and vomiting, especially if caused by motion sickness. As with saunf, you can simply add a spoonful of cloves to a cup of boiling water, allowing it to step for about 10 minutes. The concoction can then be strained and consumed.

Deep Breathing

You can also encourage your child to take deep and slow breaths through the nose so that the abdomen expands with each inhalation. Air should then be exhaled slowly as the abdomen relaxes after each breath. According to some studies, this practice activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to control the biological response linked to motion sickness and it also reduces anxiety (3)

While all of these home remedies for vomiting in children should provide relief, they may not always be effective, depending on the underlying cause of vomiting. If vomiting persists for more than 24 hours or occurs after a head injury or is accompanied by other symptoms such as a high fever, you should seek medical care swiftly.
