Food for increased libido

In a modest society like ours, sexual health and wellbeing are topics that are rarely discussed and are often frowned upon. Sex and all its aspects still remain a taboo topic. However, it was not the same for our ancestors centuries ago. From the Kama Sutra to ayurvedic cures for sexual problems, Indians were always open about sex, sexual health, and wellness. In today’s society, with the rise of stress in our jobs and daily lives, many of us encounter problems in the bedroom. Science and modern technology have come up with man-made and synthetic solutions to alleviate these problems in the form of pills, viagra, and such. But we should remember that mother nature offers safe and natural remedies that can be readily found in your local market.

Here are six herbs and fruits that can help increase your libido and improve your sex life:

Shilajit is a sticky-black tar like substance which comes from rocks in high mountainous regions. It has been used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for eons. In today’s world, Shilajit is synonymous with men’s sexual health and wellness. It is known to significantly increase testosterone levels in men which improves libido and sperm count. People suffering from heart problems should be careful while consuming Shilajit as it is known to sometimes lower blood pressure.

Ashwagandha is an ancient medicinal herb with numerous health benefits. One of its benefits is that it is a well-known aphrodisiac for both men and women. It is known to increase sexual drive by stimulating the production of nitric oxide which in turn stimulates blood flow to the genitals. It enhances blood circulation which effectively counteracts erectile dysfunction. Also known as Indian Ginseng, its blood circulation  boosting properties also enhance female libido.

Also known as ‘butternut’ or ‘butter fruit’, avocados originate from Southern Mexico. This healthy fruit is a rich source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which are often called ‘good fats’. These good fats are extremely beneficial for the cardiac system, which in turn, makes them good for boosting blood flow to the genitals. This helps in increasing sexual drive in both men and women. Avocados are especially beneficial for women as they contain the vitamin B6, which some studies show can decrease symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

Made up of the dried stigma and styles of the ‘crocus sativus flower’, this exotic Indian spice has been revered for centuries for its flavour and dye. It can take 75,000 saffron blossoms to produce a half a kilogram of saffron spice. It is known to be a libido enhancer in both men and women.  Saffron is rich in antioxidants, mainly, crocin, picrocrocin, and safranal. These antioxidants are known to improve erectile dysfunction in men and improve vaginal lubrication in women while improving overall sex drive in both.

Shatavari is a herb that comes from the Asparagus family. It has been used in ancient Indian medicine for centuries. Shatavari in Sanskrit means ‘the plant with hundred roots’ and it is known to be especially beneficial for the female reproductive system. It is an adaptogenic herb which means that it supports the body’s natural ability to deal with stress. Apart from its fresh form, Shatavari is also available in the form of powder and tonics which can be consumed daily to boost libido in women. This power herb is known to balance female hormones and reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome in women, thanks to its natural antioxidant properties.

This juicy red fruit is loved by many of us especially during the summer months. Watermelons consist of 92% water but they are a rich source of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. A relative of the cucumber, they are a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. Watermelons contain the phytonutrient citrulline, which converts to arginine, an amino acid that relaxes blood vessels. This significantly helps in improving blood flow to the erectile tissue in the male organs and to the clitoris in the female organs. Suffering from erectile dysfunction? A glass of watermelon juice or a few slices of watermelons may be all you need to alleviate your symptoms. However, for women, watermelons should be consumed in moderation as consuming too much of this fruit may block the production of estrogen, the female hormone.

Sex is an important part of our daily lives. Sometimes, you may just not be in the mood for your partner which is totally normal. However, most times, stress and a sedentary lifestyle which leads to poor blood circulation are the main culprits for a low sex drive. The fruits and ayurvedic herbs mentioned above can be used cautiously and in moderation to help improve your sex life before you turn to your medicine cabinet. It is also important to eat healthy, exercise regularly, and stay stress free to improve your sexual health naturally.
